I have just read the comment by Paula Coccoza in today’s Guardian. She praises a debut film made by Andreina Nash, showing the plight of Venezuelan student protesters.
Students are shown being kicked by armed policemen. Let me be clear: there’s nothing I hate more than police kicking students. I am French, and in my young days, during a student demonstration (1986), I sang CRS SS, comparing the French riot police to Nazis. In December 1986, Malik Oussekine died after being beaten to death by riot police.
My problem with the film is that it is a montage. Andreina Nash does not live in Venezuela. She was not on site to video the protests. The image and footage come from the Instagram Lucha Instagram page. I checked the page, and here are some excerpts:
One shows a set of three pictures. They could have been taken anywhere, Syria, Chile, etc. Is this what one calls evidence?
I don’t think it does.
